Allison Mae Hughes

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am passionate about the outdoors/environment, community building, event planning, diversity, and education. I have a Bachelors Degree in Outdoor Education and Environmental Science and a Masters in Education. My work history centers being in and out of the school system and working with local nonprofits.

Give us a glimpse into your role at United Way. How do you help us fulfill our mission? What are you most excited about accomplishing as a team?

As a Community School Coordinator in a highly diverse school in Asheville, I want to help forge connections and build community. I aim to do this through a balance of strengthening programs already in existence as well as spearheading new projects based on the needs, feedback, and passions of our community 

What’s your favorite thing about our community?

I love the authenticity and diversity of the people within this community. There is a willingness to come together for common goals as a team through highlighting the uniqueness of the individuals.

What would we find you doing when you aren’t at work?

I love backpacking/hiking, cycling, thrifting, reading, travelling, rock climbing, time with friends, and cuddles with my cat.

I am always a fan of NPR podcasts (Invisibilia and Hidden Brain)

Tell us about any committees or associations you are a part of and/or awards/recognitions you’ve received.

I am a Girl Scout Leader and I volunteer at the Asheville Tool Library. I am also currently working on a Yoga Teacher Certificate.
